The Senior Bowl can bring out the best or the worst in the participating college football players, but the quarterback position often comes out as the losing position group at the yearly showcase.
It’s a hard position to play, and to learn a new offense overnight and then try to impress the next day at the first practice while evaluators overanalyze each throw makes it impossibly difficult.
You end up with a bunch of quarterbacks — many of whom played in college systems where they might not have ever heard the word “checkdown” —throwing short passes to running backs in 7-on-7 periods in an effort to appease their new NFL overlords instead of trying tight-window throws deeper down the field.
With that said, we did get a feel for all six quarterbacks who participated, and we’ve labeled each with the dreaded “stock down” or “stock up” tags.
Jamie Newman, Georgia/Wake Forest — Stock Down
You hate to have to label Newman with a stock down tag because he didn’t perform well in Mobile after not playing for a year. He deserves the benefit of the doubt for opting out because of COVID-19 concerns and then not being around a football team for a long period.
The other quarterbacks had endured the same type of practices they saw at the Senior Bowl for the past few months. There was barely an acclimation process for those signal-callers compared to Newman. Not having seen a real defense for almost a year is going to put you behind the eight-ball, and it showed for the former Wake Forest quarterback.
