NFL Week 3: Fantasy IDP report

2MACY75 Baltimore Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton during an NFL football game against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium, Sunday, Sunday, Sept. 24, 2022 in Foxborough, Mass. (Winslow Townson/AP Images for Panini)

• Kyle Hamilton makes up for a quiet two weeks: The Baltimore Ravens safety came up with three sacks in this game with a significant change in his overall usage.

• A career-best pass-rush grade from Aidan Hutchinson: The Detroit Lions’ 2022 second-overall pick posted the best pass-rush grade of his career to go along with two sacks in Week 3.

• Concern for Uchenna Nwosu’s slow start: After 9.5 sacks in 2022, the Seattle Seahawks top edge defender is off to a very poor start in 2023 which could be a cause for concern.

Week 3 Takeaways

Waiver wire
  • DI Christian Barmore, New England Patriots: Barmore played more snaps this week, up from a 50% average through the first two weeks, and as a result, he had his best game of the year. Barmore posted a sack and an 89.1 pass-rush grade. If he continues to play more snaps, then he will be a useful starter in DT-required leagues.
  • LB Ezekiel Turner, Arizona Cardinals: With both Josh Woods and Krys Barnes now dealing with injuries, Ezekiel Turner would likely serve as the next man up should they both miss Week 4. Turner is unlikely to see a full-time role and would be a deep league add only.
  • LB Nate Landman, Atlanta Falcons: Landman made the waiver list last week due to Andersen dealing with a concussion but now with a more serious injury to Andersen, he is worth highlighting again here as the next man up for a potential every-down role.
  • LB Deion Jones, Carolina Panthers: Jones joins Kamu Grugier-Hill as the second Panthers’ linebacker waiver target in as many weeks. Jones and Grugier-Hill did not assume full-time roles in lieu of Shaq Thompson and Frankie Luvu, although there could be room for one to potentially get there this week if Luvu is out for Week 4. Grugier-Hill did play 100% of the second-half snaps with Luvu out.
  • LB Drew Sanders, Denver Broncos: Assuming Alex Singleton is already on rosters in most leagues, Sanders would be the second option stepping into Singleton’s rotational LB2 role. Sanders managed just one tackle and missed three in this game.
  • LB Isaiah McDuffie, Green Bay Packers: With the Packers playing on a short week in Week 4, De’Vondre Campbell could miss this game, which would thrust McDuffie into a larger role, although not a full-time one. He would become a deeper league add only if Campbell does miss more time.
  • LB Drue Tranquill, Kansas City Chiefs: With Nick Bolton out due to injury, Tranquill returned to relevance for the time being, leading the team in tackles and adding a half-sack on the day. Tranquill will only be worth starting should Bolton miss any more time.
  • S Jeremy Chinn, Carolina Panthers: Chinn filled in for the injured Xavier Woods and is likely to continue doing so should Woods miss any time. Chinn was a droppable IDP asset through these first few weeks of the season, but injuries could cause him to be relevant for as long as he’s filling in.
  • S Donovan Wilson, Dallas Cowboys: Wilson should see his role increase in the weeks ahead as he was coming off an injury in his season debut this week. Wilson’s role in Dan Quinn’s defense has typically been a good one for IDP production, as he plays a large chunk of his snaps in the box and around the line of scrimmage.
  • S Delarrin Turner-Yell, Denver Broncos: With Justin Simmons inactive, Delarrin Turner-Yell moved into an every-down role and would have value in deeper leagues should Simmons continue to miss time.
  • S Brian Branch, Detroit Lions: Branch played his first 100% snap share game this week with injuries to the Lions’ secondary piling up. Branch continued in his primary slot corner role but saw decent usage in the box and around the line of scrimmage, which led to a very productive day, leading his team in tackles (11).
  • S JT Woods, Los Angeles Chargers: Should Derwin James (hamstring) miss any time, JT Woods figures to be the next man up and a potential add in deeper leagues.

  • Point of interest: Kyle Hamilton had a massive game this week, posting three sacks on a 14% blitz rate, but this usage was much closer to what made him a highly-ranked and breakout IDP candidate coming into this season. Hamilton moved to more of a slot role this week, which allowed him to be more involved in the action and utilized in a more beneficial way than the previous two weeks. With Ar’Darius Washington, who was acting as the team’s primary slot, on injured reserve, there’s potential for Hamilton to continue in this role in the weeks ahead, keeping him as a top-tier fantasy option.

  • Point of interest: Germaine Pratt‘s overall snap share dipped this week after playing up over 90% in each of the first two weeks. With the Bengals playing just 55 defensive snaps, that 80% snap share creates a lot less opportunity for production. This will be a snap share to monitor going forward since if he can regain his 90% share, he’s typically been capable of putting up strong production as a top-24 IDP linebacker option.

This Browns linebacker room will continue to be a headache for IDP managers all season.

  • Point of interest: The Cowboys’ safety deployment took a step in the right direction for a return to normalcy as Donovan Wilson made his 2023 season debut. As a result, Jayron Kearse played an every-down role with 54% of his snaps coming in the box.
  • Waiver wire: Wilson should see his role increase in the weeks ahead as he was coming off an injury in his season debut this week. Wilson’s role in Dan Quinn’s defense has typically been a good one for IDP production, as he plays a large chunk of his snaps in the box and around the line of scrimmage.

  • Point of interest: As noted last week, the role change among the Colts’ linebackers is limiting Shaquille Leonard’s playing time, as he isn’t playing much on third downs while E.J. Speed is taking over that role. This is not a case of Speed overtaking Leonard for overall snaps, however, but it does hurt the potential for both players.

However, he played the entire game but was rotating in and out, especially in the first half when he only played 59% of the defensive snaps. This will be a situation worth monitoring even after Lloyd was playing a near-every-down role early in the season, it was at about this point last year when Chad Muma began cutting into his snaps which hurt his IDP relevance.

  • Point of interest: David Long tied for the team lead in total tackles, but his snaps were once again limited below 60%. As was mentioned last week, Long’s playing time is likely dependent on if Andrew Van Ginkel will be used exclusively on the edge, which depends on the availability of Jaelan Phillips. While Phillips was in the game, Van Ginkel spent eight snaps at off-ball linebacker but none in the second half when Phillips was out. Long played 54% of snaps in the first half and 70% in the second half.

  • Waiver wire: Christian Barmore played more snaps this week, up from an average of 50% through the first two weeks and as a result, he had his best game of the year. Barmore posted a sack and an 89.1 pass-rush grade. If he continues to see increased playing time, then he will be a useful starter in DT-required leagues.

Not only does Nwosu have no sacks but he has the lowest pass-rush grade on the team through three games (53.4) despite nine pressures which have come purely from volume at this point. • Point of interest: As mentioned last week, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, who was coming off a career-best game, did come back down to earth in Week 3 and much closer to his career norm. He continues to be a volume-dependant option only in most IDP leagues, which should keep him off most rosters at the moment.
