Story of the Game
Herbert has been one of the more explosive quarterbacks in the league since taking over as a starter in Week 2, and that was no different against the Jets. On passes of 10-plus yards downfield, he completed eight throws for 198 yards and two touchdowns. The rookie out of Oregon also set career-highs in completions (37) and passing yards (366).
Allen has proven to be Herbert's top target, and the pair flashed their rapport against the Jets by connecting on 16 passes — a career-high for Allen — for 145 yards and a touchdown.
The Chargers' pass rush was able to pressure Joe Flacco 14 times, holding the veteran signal-caller in check for most of the contest. Joey Bosa led the way with seven of those pressures and a 31.0% win rate. The Jets had a lot more success getting to the quarterback, generating 23 pressures and four sacks as a unit.
Rookie Watch
Herbert was by far the best rookie on the field this afternoon. He was clutch on the money downs, completing 82% of his passes and tossing three touchdowns on third down.
For the Jets, wide receiver Denzel Mims led New York in receiving yards (71) and running back La'Mical Perine left the game early but was able to get into the end zone. Tackle Mekhi Becton did not allow a single pressure on 31 pass-blocking snaps.
On the other side of the ball, safety Ashtyn Davis‘ 11 tackles led all rookies, and he also chipped in two pressures and a fumble recovery. Linebacker Kenneth Murray recorded four tackles for Los Angeles on 43 defensive snaps. The Jets’ duo of Lamar Jackson and Bryce Hall was targeted 12 times, allowing 10 catches for 83 yards.
