- According to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, the Carolina Panthers first order of business is expected to be getting an extension done with veteran linebacker Thomas Davis.
- Davis, 34, is entering the last year of his contract and is coming off a season where he led the Panthers in tackles, with 80. He accumulated 36 total stops, ranking third among his teammates and eighth among the league’s 4-3 outside linebackers. He publicly appeared on the radio stating he wanted an extension last month.
- Davis has achieved PFF grades above 80.0 in six of the last 10 seasons, and graded in the top 15 among linebackers every year from 2013 to 2015. His 2016 grade of 72.8 was his lowest since 2011, and ranked 39th of 123 qualifying linebackers.
- Davis has achieved top 10 coverage grades every year since 2012, but his performance in coverage dropped off in 2016, as he went from a coverage grade of 88.2 in 2015 to 74.6 in 2016, which provide some explanation as to why Davis hasn’t been extended sooner.
