- The Chicago Bears have claimed veteran edge-defender Lamarr Houston off waivers, according to Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune. Houston, who was recently waived by the Houston Texans, will now return to the Bears, after playing there from 2014-2016.
- After struggling with injuries for the better part of two seasons, Houston returned to game action as a rotational player for the Texans this year, and proved that he still has some gas left in the tank. Houston played 146 snaps for the Texans and managed an average PFF overall grade of 71.8.
- On his limited snaps, Houston performed well both in the pass-rush and against the run. In five games he logged 99 pass-rush snaps along with 36 in run defense; his 11 pressures earned him an 8.6 pass-rush productivity rating – just short of Jadeveon Clowney’s mark of 9.4 – and his four run stops gave him an 11.1 run-stop percentage, the best among Texans outside linebackers with at least 30 run-defense snaps this year.
- Houston’s best year as a pro came in 2015 with the Bears, so the team will aim to get him back close to that level of production. That year, Houston’s run-stop percentage of 12.4 percent ranked first among 3-4 outside linebackers, while his pass-rush productivity of 11.1 (the highest of his career) ranked 15th among players at the position.
