With Julian Edelman out with a thumb injury, Demaryius Thomas still on the PUP list and Josh Gordon‘s NFL future still murky, the New England Patriots have taken a low-risk flyer on a young and talented wide receiver ahead of the upcoming season.
According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, the six-time Super Bowl champions have signed former Bears and Saints wideout Cameron Meredith, who, when healthy, can provide a significant boost to a receiving corps that's currently devoid of firepower.
Meredith's most recent season with the New Orleans Saints will ultimately go down as a disappointment. The former undrafted free agent managed to catch just nine passes for 114 yards and a touchdown before he was sent to IR in November, just six games — 126 snaps — into his first and only season with the team. He graded below 60.0 in five of those six games but showed early signs of chemistry with quarterback Drew Brees, as the pair generated a passer rating of 147.5 from Week 3 to Week 5, fifth among the 83 receivers who saw at least 10 targets in that span.
